Sewing Maching Tension Issues

Eric, of Sailrite, gives a good demonstration of two common sewing machine tension issues. Although he makes videos for sailmaking, the use of the sewing machine (and common errors) is the same for all sewing enthusiasts and his tips are good ones and his videos are very well made :)

And Part 2:

Threads Magazine offers “Learn to Sew” Series

Threads Magazine is offering up a Learn To Sew series on YouTube that looks like it’s going to be a winner. Threads is a first class magazine and I’ve never picked up an issue that didn’t teach me several things and that’s in addition to the inspiration from their gorgeous projects!

Sewing Machine Tongue Twister :)

There are two terms in sewing that can be easily confused because of the similarity of their names. The PRESSURE setting and the PRESSER foot. This video attempts to sort out the difference, explaining how the pressure settings on the presser foot work and how and why to change the settings, as well as how to find the pressure setting control on various machines.
Marguerita McManus, author of the book Crazy Shortcut Quilts does the demo:

The Perfect “Scant” Quarter Inch Seam

Quilters, the perfect scant quarter inch seam can be an allusive thing, and just eyeballing it doesn’t always work, especially if you use different machines. The presser feet, feed dogs and needle plate markings can vary a lot!

Marci Baker of Alicia’s Attic made this great video that teaches a lot about how to get a perfect quarter inch seam on any machine. I learn a lot every time I watch one of her videos!

Up above this post you will see two new tabs on this site for pages just added this week. Pam Cortese, a former sewing machine repair tech and sewing machine shop owner, made two different series’ of videos. YouTube allows videos of up to 10 minutes – so if your topic takes 25 minutes to explain you just chop it up into several parts and call it a series :)

I have been taking machines apart and cleaning them as Pam shows in these videos for many, many years and they have added long life to my treasured machines. Please take the time to watch these! You may be pleasantly surprised at the new tips you learn and the burst of confidence Pam gives you with her well paced, accurate and personable tutorials.
