DIY Custom Machine Quilting Table – Cheap and Portable!

A flat surface around the bed of your sewing machine can make the difference between struggling with quilting and quilting with ease. Here’s one way to achieve that custom surface with some construction rigid foam insulation and a piece of flexible clear vinyl. I have also seen a blog where a quilter used this method, but set her sewing machine perpendicular to her body (needle close to her and motor farthest away). No matter what system you use, you will find that you are more comfortable and your machine quilting is easier with a flat surface for the quilt to lay on while you are quilting it.

Here’s how to adjust it for machine quilting a large quilt.

Here is a full write-up of the process as well.

The Perfect “Scant” Quarter Inch Seam

Quilters, the perfect scant quarter inch seam can be an allusive thing, and just eyeballing it doesn’t always work, especially if you use different machines. The presser feet, feed dogs and needle plate markings can vary a lot!

Marci Baker of Alicia’s Attic made this great video that teaches a lot about how to get a perfect quarter inch seam on any machine. I learn a lot every time I watch one of her videos!

Holding and Using a Rotary Cutter

A rotary cutter is as dangerous as it is useful. Please watch this video on the proper handling of a cutter and remember that the guard should be on at all times except when the blade is in contact with the fabric. Immediately after cutting ALWAYS put the blade guard back in place and never set your cutter down without putting the guard back in place.
