This is so cool, I can’t wait to try it. Using a “triple” stitch setting and a heavy weight thread, follow the seams of a charm pieced quilt to do the quilting!

A flat surface around the bed of your sewing machine can make the difference between struggling with quilting and quilting with ease. Here’s one way to achieve that custom surface with some construction rigid foam insulation and a piece of flexible clear vinyl. I have also seen a blog where a quilter used this method, but set her sewing machine perpendicular to her body (needle close to her and motor farthest away). No matter what system you use, you will find that you are more comfortable and your machine quilting is easier with a flat surface for the quilt to lay on while you are quilting it.
Here’s how to adjust it for machine quilting a large quilt.
Here is a full write-up of the process as well.

There are two terms in sewing that can be easily confused because of the similarity of their names. The PRESSURE setting and the PRESSER foot. This video attempts to sort out the difference, explaining how the pressure settings on the presser foot work and how and why to change the settings, as well as how to find the pressure setting control on various machines.

I love my KwikKlip and in this video Marie Seroskie of Katie Lane Quilts shows two methods of pinning, both using the KwikKlip. One guide that I use for determining the number of pins to use the the “hand rule” – if you put your hand anywhere on the quilt you should feel at least one pin. That helps determining good spacing and enough pins to prevent puckers in the back while quilting.

Professional machine quilter JoAnn Gruber of Eagle River Alaska shows us her technique for making her “Confetti Ribbon” design for machine quilting. This is easily adaptable to stand up or sit down quilting because it is simply a meander that is crossed over!!
Her great explanation and drawings will make you want to grab a quilt and try this out immediately
Burying the Knot

In machine quilting many quilters prefer to have no “start and stop” stitches (locking stitches taken in the same place). Instead they prefer to leave the tails of the threads hanging (always with BOTH threads on the TOP of the quilt
(watch this video if you do not know the importance of bringing up the bobbin thread) and they “bury the knots” after the machine quilting is done. Here is quilt teacher Jo Ann Gruber of Eagle River, Alaska demonstrating how to bury the knot in two videos:
